Community General Foundation History
Founded in 1957, Community General Foundation was first organized as the "Community Fund." The fund's mission was to raise funds for a new community hospital. In just a few months, the fund raised $7.2 million - making it the most successful fundraising effort of its time.
After Community Hospital first opened its doors on January 1, 1963, the Community Fund became inactive for several years. However, its efforts were eventually needed again as the hospital added programs and services.
In 1985, the Community Fund's certificate of incorporation was restated in the name of "Community General Foundation." A board of directors was elected and members agreed to support the hospital by raising funds for specific projects. The Foundation has since contributed over $18 million to Community General Hospital.
Community General Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Community General Foundation Mission
To focus public confidence and attention on those priority programs and service needs at Community General Hospital which can only be addressed through the application of private philanthropic support.
To Our Donors
Thomas Quinn, President & CEO
Since becoming part of Community General Hospital 35 years ago, I have witnessed the facility evolve in many ways. The hospital I know today is one of Central New York's important health care leaders, offering state-of-the-art medical care in a setting unlike any other hospital in our area. The quality bedside care that our dedicated staff provides to patients is truly remarkable, as are the services we offer. In 2008 our list of advancements grew by leaps and bounds. From the launch of our new da Vinci-S® robotic surgery program and the newest pharmaceutical robot, to the debut of digital mammography services and a new picture archival communication system (PACS), our growth has been extraordinary. The services we offer and the progress we have seen would certainly not have been possible without the support from our friends and our donors. I thank each and every donor for the contributions to this great hospital, and most importantly, for being a valued member of the Community General Hospital family.
Scott Matukas, Board Chair
I am honored to have been named board chair of Community General Foundation during a year of unprecedented growth and success. In 2008, the foundation achieved and surpassed aggressive goals - a clear reflection on the tremendous dedication and appreciation that our community has for this great hospital. I have always been impressed by the philanthropic support of our board, hospital staff, physicians, volunteers, auxiliary and community. I am proud to help build on this past success, and firmly believe that we are now poised to reach impressive new heights. Without your support, and other generous supporters like you, we could not have accomplished all the things that have made Community General Hospital such a special place. With you at our side, our future is indeed bright. Thank you.
John Zacharek, Vice President & Executive Director
Despite a rapidly changing and challenging economy, 2008 proved to be a very successful year for Community General Foundation. Thanks to caring and dedicated donors like you, Community General Foundation provided increased support to the hospital, so that it could continue to invest in the very latest health care technology and patient care services. As you read about these impressive advancements in the coming pages, you can take pride in knowing that you helped to make each of these improvements possible. You are a true friend to Community General Hospital - and to the thousands of patients that we serve every year. On behalf of the entire Community General family, I thank you for your generosity and commitment to our community's health care.
