PHASES OF CARDIAC REHABILITATION
Phase I: In the Hospital
This phase begins in the hospital after a heart attack, angioplasty, heart surgery, or any heart
condition, which requires close monitoring. In Phase I, the emphasis is on regaining basic
strength and understanding your disease and treatment needs.
Phase II: After Hospitalization
This phase offers a more advanc-ed, closely super-vised program of exercise and education. Phase
II patients are carefully evaluated and a program of exercise and education is designed to meet
their needs. The goal is to improve functional capacity in a supervised and safe environ-ment.
In Phase II, you will learn more about your disease and the things you can do to take control
of your health.
Phase III: Individualized Program
This phase offers continued risk factor and education programs for people with coronary artery
disease, but who are stable and need less medical supervision. Exercise includes a broader range
of physical and recreational activities. Positive lifestyle behaviors are emphasized.
Phase IV: Maintenance
This phase is available to the general adult public for primary prevention of coronary heart
disease. Eligible cardiac patients may participate for life-long secondary prevention. This
exercise program enhances heart health without medical supervision.
