The Hospitalist Service at Community General Hospital

What is a Hospitalist?

The Society of Hospital Medicine defines a Hospitalist as “a physician whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients.  Their activities include patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to Hospital Medicine.  Many patients are referred to Hospitalists by their primary care physicians for treatment during the duration of their hospitalization, then returned to the care of their PCP after discharge from the hospital.  Hospitalists also consult on and treat patients referred by surgeons and medical subspecialists during their hospitalizations.  They also care for the unassigned patient who has no primary doctor.”

How does Community General’s Hospitalist Service benefit patients?

Ø      Our Hospitalists make major contributions in the areas of quality of care and patient safety.  Their leadership and expertise reduces medical errors and achieves better patient outcomes.

Ø      Our Hospitalists provide extraordinary coverage, 24/7.  This system replaces traditional physician on-call systems for overnight coverage.

Ø      Not only do they provide formal education to residents, our Hospitalists also educate patients and families, healthcare professionals and hospital administrators.

Ø      If you have no family doctor, the Hospitalist Service at Community General Hospital will treat you after you are admitted.
