About Community General Foundation

Community General Foundation began life in 1957 when it was organized as the Community Fund to raise funds for a new community hospital.  In just a few months, the Fund had raised $7.2 million, the most successful fundraising effort of its time.

Community Hospital opened its doors January 1, 1963 and merged with Syracuse General Hospital in 1964 to become Community General Hospital .

The Community Fund organization was dormant for several years after the hospital was built, but eventually its efforts were needed again as the hospital added programs and services.  In 1985 the Community Fund’s certificate of incorporation was restated in the name of Community General Foundation.  A board of directors was elected and members agreed to support the hospital by raising funds for specific projects.  The Foundation has since contributed over $8 million to Community General Hospital .

Community General Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) organization and contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Mission

To focus public confidence and attention on those priority programs and service needs at Community General Hospital which can only be addressed through the application of private philanthropic support.

Giving

A gift of any size is appreciated and the Foundation offers donors several ways in which to contribute.  Gifts may be made outright or pledged over a number of years.  It’s easy to make a donation; please call the Foundation office at 315-492-5079 for information.

Capital Campaign

Now underway, the Foundation’s $1 million Capital Campaign is raising funds to construct a new 20-bed Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit on the Hospital’s fourth floor.  Construction began June 9, 2003 on the Unit which is scheduled to open in December 2003.

Memorial and Tribute Giving

Gifts made in memory of, or in honor of, a special individual are especially appreciated.  Those gifts are acknowledged immediately to both the donor and the appropriate family members as requested.

Community General Foundation Endowment

The Foundation’s Endowment Fund was established in 2001 to provide a permanent source of funds for hospital needs.  The principal is untouched, only the interest is used to support programs and services.

Circle of Friends

A display in the Community General Hospital lobby provides visible recognition to donors who make gifts of $250 or more in a given year.  Members of the Foundation’s Circle of Friends make donations ranging from $250 to $10,000.

It’s up to you…

You may wish to support a particular hospital department, service or program and that is easy to arrange.  As well, unrestricted gifts are always welcome, as the Foundation can then direct donations to where they will help the most.
